Hape Reversible Train Storage, E3714, cannot currently be ordered from baby enRoute; if it returns, it makes the most sense when you want loose railway pieces beneath a usable play surface. It is not a way to put Grand City Station's complete railway away unchanged. Its lift-out scenic panels, internal supports and 90 by 70.5 cm footprint determine what can stay built and what needs to come apart.
For a railway that must survive until tomorrow, buy enough surface for that actual layout. For a station you want to keep assembled, separate the building from the track reset. For a room that must clear completely, choose containers and a place for the building instead of adding railway furniture.
Inside E3714: top access, not a pull-out drawer
Hape describes E3714 as a railway play table with built-in storage. The scenic top reverses between countryside and city surfaces. Lift out a panel and the lower level is exposed; internal supports divide the space, with arches through which trains can travel.
That access matters more than the word storage. Put tomorrow's spare tracks beneath a heavily built-up section and retrieving them means disturbing that section. For a layout you intend to leave standing, keep frequently used extra trains and track beside the table, or leave an access panel clear. The interior is better suited to pieces you will not need until the next reset.
The lower level can also be part of play. Hape explicitly allows tracks on both levels and describes connecting them with ascending track and bridges. Those connectors and the railway tracks themselves are not included. Buy connecting pieces only when you want a two-level route; they do nothing for a storage-only setup. A lower-level railway also occupies space that would otherwise hold loose pieces.
Compare the published footprints
E3714 measures 90 cm across, 70.5 cm deep and 40 cm high, as shown in Hape's dimension drawing. These are external table dimensions, not the clear area inside the rim or the storage compartment.
- Grand City Station: Hape's published layout is about 135 by 54 cm. Its length exceeds the table's 90 cm external width by about 45 cm.
- Busy City Rail Set: its published layout is about 85 by 76 cm. Although shorter than the table, it is about 5.5 cm deeper.
Both published footprints exceed the table in at least one direction, so do not assume either photographed layout transfers unchanged. A smaller route is a different configuration, not a reason to buy E3714 expecting either pictured railway to transfer straight across. Hape does not publish clear internal compartment dimensions, so plan a separate home for the station or crane instead of counting on storage beneath the panels.
1. Whole layout retained overnight
Leave: the track connected, buildings in place and the same route ready for the next session. On E3714, that means a layout contained within its actual play surface, with no need to lift a covered panel between sessions.
Format fit: If E3714 becomes orderable again, it suits a compact railway when you also value its reversible surface and concealed spare-piece storage. For the unchanged Grand City or Busy City layout, choose a larger play surface with clear usable dimensions that accommodate that layout. An existing suitable surface avoids buying furniture twice.
Do not buy: this table solely because it and the railway are both Hape. Track-system compatibility does not make an oversized layout fit. Nor do additional bins solve a shortage of continuous surface.
2. Station retained, track reset
Leave: the station assembled on a shelf or a clear part of the table; disconnect the surrounding track. Store the loose rails and vehicles below the panels if they fit without preventing the panels from seating. Tomorrow's work is reconnecting a route, not reassembling its main destination.
If E3714 returns, its strongest fit is a railway that needs a play surface and loose-piece storage in one piece of furniture. Keep the station off any panel that needs regular lifting. A separate shelf leaves the entire scenic surface available when the child wants a different route.
Format fit: if E3714 returns and both of its jobs are useful, the table can combine the play surface and loose-track storage. If you already have a play surface, a container for the disconnected track is the more direct answer. Give the assembled station its own space. Skip: an extra full railway or a two-level expansion solely for tidying; neither supplies the missing home for an existing building.
3. Full pack-away after play
Leave: no railway on the shared floor. Disconnect the tracks, put vehicles and loose pieces in an accessible container, and move the station to its own shelf or suitably sized box. Full pack-away can mean clearing the play area without dismantling every building.
Buy: a track container and, only if needed, separate storage for the assembled landmark. A low container makes more sense for rails than a tall box chosen around a station; keeping the building separately also avoids burying the pieces used to start the next route.
Do not buy: E3714 for this job alone. Its under-panel storage conceals pieces but does not remove the furniture. For households with younger children, keep small toys and parts out of their reach. Do not rely on the lift-out panels to keep small parts out of reach.
E3714 cannot currently be ordered from baby enRoute. Browse the Hape collection for available railway options. If you are considering the currently orderable Grand City Station, plan a larger surface or a track reset, not an unchanged transfer of the full railway onto E3714. If E3714 returns, judge it by its accessible loose-piece storage beneath a play surface, not by an unverified promise that a complete station fits inside.
