Booster readiness comes before brand. The Nuna AACE path centres on its 16.4 lb published weight, higher stated child limits, and three-position seat depth. The Clek Oobr path centres on rigid-UAS attachment, an 18 in rear width, and a removable back; the better option is the one that produces the verified belt fit. A booster decision begins only after the child has outgrown the forward-facing child seat, applicable provincial law permits the transition, and the child can sit straight for correct belt fit. The winner is the seat that positions the vehicle belt correctly on every ride.
Pass the booster-readiness gate first
Transport Canada says a child moves to a booster after outgrowing the forward-facing child seat and weighing at least 40 lb, while provincial or territorial law may add requirements. A booster rider must remain seated upright with the lap and shoulder belt correctly positioned for the whole trip. If the child cannot sit straight with the back against the seatback and knees bent over the edge, choose another booster seat.
The current Canadian AACE labels its high-back mode for age 4 and older, 40-110 lb, and 38-60 in. Its no-back mode begins at age 5 and 50 lb, with a 120 lb maximum and the same 38-60 in height range. The current Canadian Oobr lists both high-back and backless use from a recommended age of 4, 40-100 lb, and 40-57 in. Always follow every applicable label and fit rule, not age or weight alone.

AACE publishes the longer child-use envelope, but that does not guarantee it will fit a particular child longer. Oobr's shoulder-belt guide range and AACE's expanding shoulder system interact differently with torso height, vehicle roofline, and head restraint. Fit ends when any manufacturer limit or belt-position rule is no longer met.
Use the belt-fit checkpoint
Transport Canada describes correct booster belt placement this way: the lap belt lies low and snug across the hips, and the shoulder belt crosses the middle of the shoulder. Check the lap- and shoulder-belt position on the child before every trip.
Seat the child in each booster in the intended vehicle. Adjust the headrest and belt guide according to the manual, then have the child buckle independently. Check belt retraction after the child leans forward and settles back. Repeat with the child's usual outerwear, avoiding bulky layers that interfere with belt placement.
A high-back booster also needs to cooperate with the vehicle seat and head restraint. Use the booster and vehicle instructions to decide whether the vehicle head restraint can remain in its required position. Do not remove a vehicle head restraint or change its position unless both manuals permit it.
Vehicle width is more than the seat base
Oobr publishes 18 in at the rear and 15.5 in at the front, increasing to 20 in with its cupholder. AACE lists 11.8 in in its overall product dimensions, but Nuna also states that the shoulder system expands as the headrest rises. Those figures are not equivalent maximum-shoulder envelopes.
For a narrow bench, test the booster at the child's required headrest position and with every accessory that will be used. Test the complete seating arrangement in the intended vehicle before purchase. A paper width cannot prove three-across fit.
AACE is 3.6 lb lighter than Oobr in high-back form. That may matter if the booster moves between vehicles. Oobr becomes 10 lb in backless mode. Compare the mode the child needs now.
High-back to backless is not an automatic birthday
AACE sets a higher threshold for its no-back mode: age 5 and at least 50 lb. Oobr's published backless range begins at its recommended age 4 and 40 lb. Those are product-specific permissions, not evidence that an earlier transition is desirable for a particular child.
Remain in high-back mode while it provides the better allowed belt fit or helps the child maintain position. Move to backless only when the exact booster instructions, child size, vehicle support, and belt geometry all permit it. If neither booster positions the belt correctly, choose a different booster rather than forcing the comparison.
Two scenarios where the answer changes
AACE wins the shared-car plan when the child fits its guides, the adjustable seat depth works on both benches, and caregivers frequently carry the high-back booster between vehicles. Oobr's published high-back weight is 20 lb.
Oobr wins the fixed-car geometry plan when its rigid-UAS attachment, shoulder-guide range, and removable back provide a confirmed belt fit in the primary vehicle. Its published front and rear widths also give the buyer clearer width checkpoints, provided the optional cupholder is included in the measurement when used.
Neither product can be selected from limits alone. A booster that is within the child's weight range but places the shoulder belt at the neck is not the right fit for that child and vehicle combination.
Run the child-and-vehicle belt-fit check
- Confirm the child has outgrown the forward-facing harness and meets local law plus the booster's labels.
- Check lap and shoulder belt placement in the primary vehicle.
- Raise the headrest to the child's actual position and recheck side clearance and roof clearance.
- Confirm buckle access, belt retraction, and vehicle head-support requirements.
- Repeat the check in every vehicle that will use the booster.
Understand what UAS does on a booster
The vehicle lap-and-shoulder belt restrains the child in booster use. AACE's ISOFIX attachments and Oobr's rigid UAS attach the unoccupied booster to the vehicle according to their instructions; they do not replace buckling the child with the vehicle belt. Follow each manual for vehicles or seating positions where the attachment cannot be used.
This distinction matters during carpools. A caregiver should know whether an empty booster needs to be secured when UAS is not used, how the connector is released, and how the child routes the belt. Do not let the attachment system hide poor lap or shoulder belt placement.
Repeat the belt check in the second vehicle
Vehicle belts emerge from different heights and angles. A booster that guides the shoulder belt cleanly in a family SUV may allow slack or neck contact in a smaller car. Check the child's actual high-back setting in each regular vehicle and confirm that the belt retracts freely through the guide.
Backless fit can change even more because the vehicle seat and head restraint provide the upper-body support. When the child becomes eligible under the exact booster instructions, repeat the full lap, shoulder, head-support, and behaviour check. Do not assume that removing the back preserves the fit that worked in high-back mode.
Plan for carpools without guessing
If the booster will travel to school or activities, identify who carries it, which mode the child currently uses, and where its manual can be found. AACE's lower high-back weight may be useful here; Oobr's 10 lb backless weight may matter only after the child legitimately reaches that mode. Compare today's configuration.
Teach the child to identify a twisted belt, a lap belt riding on the abdomen, or a shoulder belt slipping off. The adult remains responsible for checking fit before the vehicle moves.
Use a stationary child-and-vehicle fit check for the purchase decision. During ongoing use, recheck that the lap and shoulder belt remain correctly positioned for the whole trip. If posture repeatedly changes belt fit, choose another booster that supports the required positioning.
