Quick answer: Build a bottle-cleaning kit around the smallest opening in the feeding system. Separate cleaning from disinfection
Cleaning removes visible milk and residue through disassembly, water, detergent, friction, and rinsing. Disinfection uses a method intended to reduce microorganisms after the pieces are clean. One does not erase the need for the other when both are advised for the infant, milk, and feeding system.
Health Canada's powdered infant formula guidance tells caregivers to clean counters and hands, clean and disinfect preparation utensils, and sterilize bottles, nipples, spoons, lids, and other equipment by boiling them in an open pan of water for two minutes before formula preparation. The same page emphasizes following the formula package because preparation instructions differ.
Quebec's public-health guide provides more detailed bottle-cleaning and disinfection directions that vary with the milk used and the child's age and health context. Because public guidance and product instructions address different situations, use the current advice that applies to your child and feeding method, and ask a health-care professional when the directions are unclear or conflict.
A bottle brush is part of the cleaning step. Do not describe a brush as a sterilizer, and do not assume that adding detergent to a handle creates a disinfection cycle.
Set up the sink before the feed ends
- Choose a clean area for disassembly.

Inspect and replace the tool when its shape changes

There is no useful universal replacement date for every brush material and household routine. Run a dry coverage test
Before the kit enters daily use, place every clean, dry part on a towel. Point to the tool that reaches each surface.
